This session on Epigenetics in Development of Obesity will explore how epigenetic modifications affect the regulation of genes that are involved in processes such as metabolism, energy balance, and adipogenesis, all of which contribute to obesity risk. The mechanisms of DNA methylation, histone modification, and regulation by non-coding RNAs will be discussed in the context of how environmental exposures (e.g. diet, activity and early life exposure) can impact those mechanisms. Epigenetic biomarkers for predicting obesity risk for obesity to guide precision interventions will also be discussed. Experts in genetics, epigenetics and metabolic medicine will provide an overview of the current research on the topic highlighting implications of understanding epigenetics for improving prevention and/or precision medicine strategies for obesity.
