Adipogenesis Mechanisms

Adipogenesis is the process through which preadipocytes differentiate into mature adipocytes - cells that are responsible for energy storage and maintaining metabolic homeostasis. This process is regulated by transcription factors, such as PPARγ and C/EBPα, which are involved in expression of genes involved in both lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity. In addition to these transcription factors, adipocyte differentiation is influenced by several important signaling pathways such as Wnt, MAPK and PI3K/Akt, which respond to hormonal and nutritional cues. Dysregulated adipogenesis is associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease. Current research demonstrates the important and emerging roles of epigenetic mechanisms; microRNAs; and endocrine factors, which may provide opportunities for obesity and metabolic disease treatment and management.
